Kansas City also made a statement
on Thursday with a 19-10 victory over Denver.
Both AFC West squads now have identical 7-4 records,
and each would make the playoffs if the season
ended today.
The Broncos loss was so distressing
that it forced a change in quarterbacks. Rookie
Jay Cutler will start next week versus Seattle
in replace of Jake Plummer.
The marquee match-up on Sunday
was Chicago at New England. The Patriots had underachieved
at home this year, and this was their last chance
to beat a quality opponent at Gillette Stadium.
New England got it done 17-13,
although it was a turnover filled game (nine in
total) that each team tried to give away. The
Patriots are now 8-3 with a two game lead in the
AFC East division, while Chicago is 9-2 and still
in control of the NFC conference.
Baltimore (9-2) continued
their stellar play at home with a 27-0 win over
arch-rival Pittsburgh. Baltimore keeps their three
game lead over Cincinnati in the AFC North, while
Pittsburgh looks out of the playoff chase at 4-7.
The Jets (6-5) made sure
they took care of business at home with a 26-11
dismantling of Houston (3-8). The Jets stayed
alive in the AFC East, while Houston continued
their downward spiral after losing a nail biter
to Buffalo last week.
Cincinnati won their second
game in a row by beating Cleveland, 30-0. At 6-5,
the Bengals have the same record as Jacksonville
and the Jets, and are very much in the AFC playoff
picture. The Browns fell to 3-8 and are officially
looking ahead to the 2007 draft.
As mentioned, Jacksonville
is 6-5, and that is because they dropped a 27-24
decision to the Bills. Buffalo is a very tough
road venue, but at some point, this Jaguars team
needs to prove it can play on the road (1-4 this
year).
Buffalo is surprisingly hanging
around the playoff chase at 5-6.
Carolina (6-5) did not do
themselves a favor with a 17-13 loss at Washington
(4-7). This is not the kind of game that a team
with playoff aspirations should lose. The Panthers
have another road game at Philadelphia next week,
when they hope to even their road record at 3-3.
The NY Giants (6-5) blew
a 21-0 fourth quarter lead, and lost 24-21 to
Tennessee (4-7). It was a major blow to the Giants’
NFC East title hopes, although they would make
the playoffs if the season ended today.
In San Diego, the Chargers
(9-2) struggled mightily against the Raiders (2-9),
but pulled away late for a 21-14 win.
Overall, the favorites were
3-0 on Thursday, but just 5-7 on Sunday.
