Notre Dame (-6.5) at
Georgia Tech
Notre Dame went 9-3 last
year, although two of the losses to USC and Michigan
State were very close. The Irish did have a disappointing
loss to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl, but they
return this year ranked 2nd in the AP pre-season
poll.
We all know that Notre Dame
is loaded on the offensive side of the ball. Quarterback,
Brady Quinn leads their “pass happy”
offense, and it should eat up an inexperienced
Georgia Tech secondary. After all, it is not easy
to contain the likes of receivers, Jeff Samardzija
and Rhema McKnight, or even pronounce them for
that matter.
If the passing game is not
clicking, for some strange reason, Coach Charlie
Weis can always run the ball with Darius Walker.
The Yellow Jackets of Georgia
Tech were 7-5 last year despite impressive wins
against Auburn, Clemson and Miami. Part of the
reason was a tough non-conference schedule. This
year is the same with non-conference games against
Notre Dame and Georgia.
Georgia Tech has to rebound
from their poor offensive play of last year. Offensive
coordinator, Patrick Nix has taken over the play
calling duties from Head Coach, Chan Gailey. That
could be a good thing for the Irish. If Notre
Dame has a weakness, it has to be their defense,
and what better team to be playing than one going
through a coaching change on offense.
Georgia Tech will need to
keep the game close because the Fighting Irish
game-plan will be nothing short of an all-out
air attack. There will be short passes, medium
passes, and long passes, and plenty of scoring
to boot.
Summary and Outlook
Georgia Tech is a good football
team playing at home. Although their offense struggled
last year, they do have experience, and the defense
returns most of their front seven. You can also
not discount how well they played against ranked
teams last year.
Notre Dame’s brass
knows that this first game will set the tone for
a run at the national championship. Their players
will be fired up for opening day, and they have
the talent to back it up on the field.
The 6.5 point spread is always
a tricky one. It is almost as if you are being
dared to take the favorite. Even if that is the
case, this is one dare that I do not mind taking.
I see the Irish winning by double digits.
Pick: Notre Dame
