The only disappointing part
about this game is that it is not two undefeated
teams going head to head. That is because Auburn
could not take care of business last week against
Arkansas. The Tigers lost 27-10 and dropped from
number two to 11 in the AP Poll.
While Auburn stumbled, Florida
has taken advantage of three straight home games
to beat Kentucky, Alabama, and LSU. For those
who think Florida can’t play outside “The
Swamp”, they did win at Tennessee a month
ago, and the Volunteers have proven to be a very
good team this year.
The key match-up to watch
in this game is Kenny Irons and the Auburn running
attack versus Florida’s run defense. Irons
is one of the most talented backs in the nation,
but he has been banged up some this year, and
the Gators are only giving up 57 yards per game
on the ground.
Irons has not had the Heisman
quality year that most people expected. You would
assume that would mean more throwing opportunities
for junior quarterback, Brandon Cox. The reality
is that Cox seldom throws more than 20 times per
game, due to questionable pass protection and
inexperienced receivers.
Auburn has to hope that a
fired-up home crowd is enough to jump start an
offense that needs an early score as a confidence
booster.
Florida has a much better
balance on offense with quarterback Chris Leak
behind center. Unlike Irons, Leak is a legitimate
Heisman candidate, even though his passing yardage
numbers are just 19th in the nation. The most
important statistic for Leak is 14 touchdowns
versus 5 interceptions. If he has a 3:1 ratio
tomorrow night, the Gators stay undefeated.
Florida is favored by
two points at Auburn on Saturday night.
Other
games on Saturday have Michigan (6-0) at Penn
State (4-2). Michigan is without star wide
receiver Mario Manningham, and the Nittany Lions
are always dangerous at home. Manningham had eight
touchdowns in the last four games, and he will
be missed, which is one of the reasons that the
Wolverines are only 5.5 point favorites.
Elsewhere in the Big-10,
Ohio State (6-0)
tries to hold on to their number one ranking when
they play at Michigan
State (3-3). A few weeks ago, this looked
like a game to circle on the calendar, but while
the Buckeyes have rolled on, the Spartans have
rolled over. Ohio State is favored by 14 points.
In the Pac-10,
USC (5-0) gets receiver Dwayne Jarrett
back as they host Arizona State (3-2). Receiver,
Steve Smith will also play despite being banged
up. The Trojans are 19 point favorites, but they
have played two very close games the last couple
of weeks. ASU has been outscored 97-34 the last
two weeks against Oregon and California which
is why this spread is so high.
Finally, the Friday night
game tonight is
Pittsburgh giving 10.5 points at Central
Florida (2-3). If it seems like there is
college football every night of the week, that’s
because there practically is. Pittsburgh is 5-1
and 2-0 in the underrated Big East conference.
Keep an eye out on Tyler Palko, one of the best
quarterbacks in the country despite little recognition.
