The
Cover Corner - October 26, 2006
by: VIP.com
By Michael Licalsi: This
column now has an 8-10 record and is temporarily
heading in the wrong direction. Tonight’s
game is Clemson at Virginia Tech, another Thursday
night tilt for the Hokies after playing one against
BC two weeks ago. This time, it is in Blacksburg.
Editor’s Note: The
selections in this column are purely the opinion
of the writer, and are not being endorsed by any
or all parties.
Clemson (-4.5) at Virginia
Tech
Clemson (7-1, 4-1 ACC) is
10th ranked in the country, and looking to extend
their longest winning streak in seven years when
they visit Virginia Tech (5-2, 2-2) tonight.
Clemson tops the ACC with
259.4 rushing yards and 454.9 total yards per
game. They have also outscored their last five
opponents by a total of 224-40.
Before we get into the rest
of this article, let’s address the injury
situation. Running back, James Davis has been
upgraded to probable despite an injured shoulder.
Receiver Chansi Stuckey, who has missed three
games with a broken foot, is also expected to
play this week.
What does this mean? It means
the Tigers will have not only a dominating rushing
game, but also a very productive passing attack.
The downside on the injury
front is that senior offensive lineman, Roman
Fry is out for the year with a torn ACL. Chris
McDuffie, a junior from Danville, Virginia, moves
into the starting lineup at Fry's guard position.
We saw McDuffie step in, and step up, when his
number was called last week against Georgia Tech,
and they have a much better defensive line than
the Hokies.
In their last two ACC games,
Virginia Tech has been outscored 60-30 in defeats
against Georgia Tech and Boston College, gaining
a total of 75 rushing yards. (They did rebound
last week against Southern Miss, 36-6) When the
Hokies have to rely on the quarterback position
to carry the offensive load, it will always be
a long night.
Summary and Outlook
In every match up category
(yards per game, points per game, etc) Clemson
dominates. Virginia Tech on the other hand, is
riding on their reputation of years gone by.
Virginia Tech may have five
wins on the year, but one was against Division
1-AA Northeastern. Another was against Cincinnati,
in which the Hokies were trailing in the 4th quarter.
The other three wins were
against Duke (113th offense, 62nd defense), North
Carolina State (96th offense, 43rd defense) and
Southern Mississippi (80th offense, 77th defense).
That hardly prepares them
for what rolls into town tonight in the wonderful
city of Blacksburg Virginia, just a stones throw
from Pulaski and Christiansburg Virginia, all
just south of Roanoke.
Clemson is getting better
every week and is solid through and through. I
just can’t see the Hokies moving the ball
with consistency, and they are not a big play
offense. Clemson is too fast and too strong to
let the Hokies establish sustained momentum, even
with the home field advantage.
Pick: Clemson
