49ers
at seahawks - The Cover Corner - December 14,
2006

Editor’s Note: The selections in this column
are purely the opinion of the writer, and are not
being endorsed by any parties. San
Francisco (+9.5) at Seattle
Seattle is 8-5 and will wrap
up the NFC West division with a win tonight. The
Seahawks could have clinched last week, but they
fell victim in Arizona to a Cardinals team that
is just hitting their stride.
San Francisco’s (5-8)
defense has played decent against some of the
best rushers in the league, but will they be up
for the challenge of the resurging Shaun Alexander?
Alexander ran for 201 yards in their last home
game against Green Bay.
The 49ers have a very underrated
running game of their own in the person of Frank
Gore, but he will need 25 plus carries this week
if they have any chance of winning.
Looking at the metrics, Seattle
is 5-1 straight up at home, while San Francisco
is 1-5 straight up on the road. The Seahawks have
scored 20 or more points eight times, while the
49ers have given up at least 30 points seven times.
Four of those 30 point San Fran games were on
the road.
Seattle is 4-8-1 against
the spread (ATS), but you have to keep in mind
that big injuries made up a good portion of that
time.
San Francisco is 7-6 ATS,
but they have not come close to covering in their
last two games.
The 49ers are also on a three
game losing streak overall, and they could have
an emotional letdown knowing they are out of the
Wild Card race and are just playing for NFL draft
positioning.
I like the fact that Seattle
is coming off a loss and needs a win to clinch
their division. Veteran leadership on and off
the field give the Seahawks a major advantage
in getting prepared to execute on game day.
My only concern about this
game is the weather. The National Weather Service
is calling for showers, and those who have been
to Seattle know showers can be heavy, cold, and
non-stop.
Still, I like this spot as
Seattle is due for an offensive reawakening at
home, and they have revenge on their mind after
losing 20-14 earlier this year in San Francisco
when Seneca Wallace was at quarterback.
Seattle quarterback, Matt
Hasselbeck is back and getting healthier by the
day, and I say they win by double digits.
Pick: Seattle To Cover
The Spread
