It may be the end of February
and college football does not start for a good
six months, but it is not too early to think
about 2006. The two teams that played in last
year’s title game, USC and Texas, suffered
big losses to the NFL, but they are still among
next year’s favorites. Here is a look
at the top seven.
BCS
Lines - Bet Now: Ohio State 13:2
The Buckeyes beat Notre Dame
soundly in last year’s Fiesta Bowl, 34-20.
Quarterback Troy Smith proved that he was championship
caliber in that game and he is returning this
season. Running back Antonio Pittman and wide
receiver Ted Ginn, Jr. will also be back. Key
losses include their entire linebacker crew
and receiver, Santonio Holmes.
BCS
Lines - Bet Now: Notre Dame 13:2
It is pretty ironic that the
team that Ohio State beat so soundly in the
Fiesta Bowl is the co-favorite. That is what
happens when you have the Heisman favorite in
quarterback Brady Quinn. Coach Charlie Weis
proved that he could recreate his NFL magic
at the collegiate level, and he should be more
dangerous this year as the players have another
year under his system.
BCS
Lines - Bet Now: Oklahoma 8:1
Running back Adrian Peterson
will likely be playing in his last college season
before heading to the NFL. He would like to
take a little Heisman hardware with him, which
is a good possibility. In order for the Sooners
to be championship caliber, quarterback Rhett
Bomar must make a big leap forward in his play.
BCS
Lines - Bet Now: USC 12:1
Only USC could lose a Heisman
winning quarterback and running back and still
be one of next year’s favorites. That
is the kind of program that Pete Carroll has,
they do not rebuild, they reload. Junior quarterback,
John David Booty will battle red-shirt freshman,
Mark Sanchez to see who wins USC’s glamour
position.
BCS
Lines - Bet Now: LSU 12:1
LSU’s 40-3 demolishing
of Miami in last year’s Peach Bowl turned
some heads, but remember this team shared a
national title in 2003. Second year Coach, Les
Miles wants to cement his own reputation, and
he has plenty of options at quarterback with
JaMarcus Russell, Matt Flynn and Ryan Perrilloux.
BCS
Lines - Bet Now: Texas 12:1
Quarterback, Vince Young is headed
for the NFL although he will likely spend most
of 2006 learning from the bench. There are also
major losses on the defensive side of the ball.
Coach Mack Brown definitely caught lighting
in a bottle last year, it remains to be seen
whether he can do it again.
Bet
Now: Florida State 12:1
It is a little surprising that
Florida State is listed ahead of Florida (15:1)
and their quarterback Chris Leak, but chalk
that up to the reputation of Bobby Bowden. Bowden
needs to reenergize an offense that struggled
under freshman, Drew Weatherford. The defense
should continue to be strong.
