Final Score: AFC 38, NFC 27
Honolulu, HI (Wager On Football.com) - Peyton
Manning picked up right where he left off in the regular
season, passing for 130 yards and three touchdowns
to lead the AFC to a 38-27 victory over the NFC in
the 35th Pro Bowl on Sunday.
Manning, who set an NFL record with 49 touchdown
passes for Indianapolis in the regular season, completed
six of his 10 passes on the way to earning MVP honors.
His closest competition was probably Atlanta quarterback
Michael Vick, who passed for a touchdown and ran for
another score in the third quarter to help the NFC
trim its 18-point halftime deficit. Vick ended 14-of-24
for 205 yards with an interception.
Three receivers on the AFC side caught touchdown
passes, including Manning's teammate Marvin Harrison,
who caught two passes for a team-leading 66 yards.
Pittsburgh wide receiver Hines Ward also caught a
TD pass, one of two touchdowns he scored on two consecutive
touches in the first half. His return of a failed
NFC onside kickoff in the second quarter was the first
kickoff return touchdown in Pro Bowl history.
The AFC jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter
on Manning's first two touchdown passes of the game,
a 62-yard completion to Harrison and a 41-yard strike
to Ward.
The NFC followed the second score with a game-long
84-yard drive led by Minnesota's Daunte Culpepper,
pulling within 14-7 on a nice 12-yard touchdown run
by Philadelphia running back Brian Westbrook early
in the second quarter.
Westbrook rushed seven times for 39 yards. Giants
running back Tiki Barber led the NFC with nine rushes
for 70 yards.
The NFC's attempted onside kick after Westbrook's
score landed right in Ward's hands, and the Pittsburgh
wideout faced only bad tackling on his way to a 39-
yard score and the first kickoff return touchdown
in Pro Bowl history.
Manning's third touchdown pass of the game, a 13-yarder
to San Diego tight end Antonio Gates, gave the AFC
a 28-7 lead with 5:50 left in the first half.
Eagles kicker David Akers, who missed a 43-yard field
goal try early in the game, was good on a 33-yarder
near the end of the half to pull the NFC within 28-10.
Vick then got the NFC back into the game in the third
quarter, throwing a 27- yard touchdown pass to Rams
receiver Torry Holt before scoring himself on a three-yard
run to make it a 28-24 game.
Holt led all receivers with five catches for 99 yards.
A 44-yard field goal from Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri
extended the AFC lead to 31-24 early in the fourth
quarter, but the NFC got those points back on Akers'
29-yarder with 9:04 remaining in the game.
The AFC then put the game away when San Diego's Drew
Brees handed off to teammate LaDainian Tomlinson for
a four-yard run to make it 38-27 with 5:15 left.
Game Notes
Vick became the first player since Marcus Allen in
1986 with a touchdown pass and a rushing touchdown
in the Pro Bowl...Manning became the first player
since Joe Theismann in 1983 to earn MVP honors in
both the regular season and the Pro Bowl...Philadelphia
cornerback Lito Sheppard intercepted Super Bowl rival
Tom Brady of New England in the third quarter, setting
up Vick's three-yard touchdown run. Sheppard's teammate
and starting NFC quarterback Donovan McNabb was just
1-of-8 for 24 yards with an interception...Pittsburgh
linebacker Joey Porter set up teammate Ward's touchdown
with an interception of McNabb...An interception by
Buffalo's Takeo Spikes -- and his successful lateral
to Porter -- set up Manning's third touchdown pass...NFC
head coach Jim Mora (Falcons) and AFC head coach Bill
Cowher (Steelers) have never faced off in a regular
or postseason contest...The AFC now owns an 18-17
lead all- time in the Pro Bowl.
