NFL
Football Bet Rant
We are coming to you live from
the parking lot of majestic Qwest Field in Seattle,
Washington. I am deep in the heart of the enemy
and I know I said I wasn’t going to rant
on about the Cowboys but I am at the game so
cut me some slack, all right? I seem to hang
with a lot of ‘Hawk fans but I don’t
hold it against them. They can’t help
being wrong. One of the aforementioned ‘Hawkies
came through with a ticket and I had to be here
to watch my Boyz shoot the ‘Hawks down.
I’ll probably talk a little smack while
they do too, hard to believe, eh? That’s
enough, I was bragging about being at the game
today, let me have my moment of glory.
Location aside let’s try
and get to the bottom of this debate of who’s
for real and who are pretenders showing early
season adrenaline boost at RB. I discussed the
big boys last week but let’s talk about
some other guys who have impressed me early
in the season. Let’s start with Gruden’s
luxury ride the ‘Cadillac’, Carnell
Williams. This guy is for real and has a minor
injury right now but after almost 80 carries
in 2+ games, getting a flat is no worry for
the Bucs offense. The NFL is a tough league
but this is a tough kid and he will smash it
up in the hole for three yards when he has to
but is an explosive threat to break any run
to the house or garage, whatever. He is the
real deal and Gruden will let him rest so he
is in mint condition for the playoff run late
in the season.
His running mate at Auburn Ronnie
Brown started slowly but has been very good
lately and shows the promise that had Miami
draft him 3 picks ahead of Cadillac. Brown has
size, speed and power and has looked much better
than former stud Ricky Williams and looks to
be capable of handling the future for the ‘Phins.
The run on Friday against KC was a sign of good
things to come, laying the smackdown on the
LB and blazing down the sidelines for a 65 yard
TD. Auburn may be the new RB ‘U’
with these two following the path of former
Auburn stars like Stephen Davis, Rudi Johnson
and some guy named Bo Jackson.
Among guys we knew were good
and who continue to prove us right, how about
Willis MacGahee up in Buffalo. This guy is a
machine and has Buffalo fighting for the division
title in the AFC East. Stephen Jackson has looked
good with limited touches but you can just see
his explosiveness when he runs straight ahead.
He runs like he thinks no one can tackle him.
He has been impressive early on but he will
get more chances to prove it while Bulger suffers
a shoulder problem. Westbrook is right, the
Eagles need to use him right. The guy is a very
good player and getting the ball in his hands
on more running plays will help the Eagles immensely.
I don’t know that he is as good as LT,
as he implied, but he could be much better and
more of a factor with more touches. RB is the
second most important position on a football
team and having a good one can be the difference
between a playoff team and floundering to a
losing record. Many teams flounder for years
before they find a runner that can be ‘that’
guy to take them to the promised land.

So before I wrap up this edition
of the rant I want to give props to the two
best wideouts in the game. These guys have quietly
gone out and dominated defensive backs for years
and continue to help their teams win, Torry
Holt and Marvin Harrison. Best receivers in
the game and we will get to why they are and
the ‘other’ guys aren’t next
week but I am just too jacked about the game
to rant on. It is raining in Seattle and Qwest
is an open stadium and I am still stoked about
sitting in the rain for 3 ½ hours…bigger
and better next week the rant is over and I
am back to the pool.
