The NFL schedule
for the 2005 season has been released and the defending
Super Bowl champion New England Patriots will again
open the new campaign in prime time on Thursday,
September 8.
The Patriots will face the Oakland Raiders to kick
off the season at Gillette Stadium. It will mark
the fourth consecutive season the NFL begins the
campaign with a Thursday night opener, and will
also be enigmatic wideout Randy Moss' debut as a
Raider.
Thursday night's game will also mark Oakland's
first visit to New England since the 2001 AFC Divisional
Playoff game in the snow. That game introduced the
"tuck" rule to the football world.
New England, the reigning and three-time Super
Bowl champion, will be highlighted in three other
prime time games in 2005 and will also battle the
Pittsburgh Steelers in a rematch of the AFC Championship
on September 25.
The NFC-champion Philadelphia Eagles kick off their
season on Monday night, September 12, at the Georgia
Dome versus Atlanta. Philadelphia finally ended
its title game curse with a victory over the Falcons
in the NFC Championship game last winter. The rematch
also features two of the NFL's most exciting quarterbacks
in Donovan McNabb and Michael Vick.
The Eagles will also be featured in three other
prime time games this upcoming season.
Philadelphia, Atlanta, Green Bay, Indianapolis
and Pittsburgh will make three appearances on Monday
night during the 2005 campaign, while the Patriots
will play a pair of Monday nighters in addition
to the Thursday opener.
New head coaches in the league this season will
be Miami's Nick Saban, Cleveland's Romeo Crennel
and San Francisco's Mike Nolan. All three will make
their debuts on Sunday, September 11. The Dolphins
open the 2005 campaign versus Denver, while Cleveland
starts with Cincinnati and San Francisco hosts St.
Louis.
Peyton Manning and the Colts will get another shot
at the Patriots in Foxboro in Week 9 on Monday night.
Indianapolis hasn't won in New England since Manning
was taking snaps at the University of Tennessee,
and Tom Brady was in high school.
The NFL will also play a regular-season game outside
of the United States for the first time in the league's
86-year history in October when the Arizona Cardinals
meet the San Francisco 49ers in Mexico City.
The Cardinals will be the host of the nationally-televised
Sunday night contest on October 2, as ESPN will
broadcast the game starting at 8:30 p.m. (et).
The traditional Thanksgiving Day games in Week
12 on November 24 will pit Atlanta at Detroit and
Denver at Dallas.
The NFL will also play games on Christmas Eve and
Christmas Day. There are 13 games on Saturday, December
24 and two on Christmas Day. The Packers host the
Bears, while Minnesota travels to Baltimore on December
25.
The season will come to a close on Sunday, January
1 when all 28 of the 32 teams will play. Two season-ending
games will be played Saturday, December 31.
The playoffs will begin the next weekend with the
wild card round, followed by the divisional playoffs
on the weekend of January 14-15. The conference
