Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich
suffered a broken bone in his left ankle during
Sunday's 24-17 win over the Cardinals and will
miss at least a month of action.
"He's got a crack in the
ankle," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio told
the Associated Press following the game. "The
best-case scenario is about a month out, depending
on how quickly he heals. It could be worse;
we just won't know until we see how the injury
heals."
Leftwich, having the best season
of his brief career, suffered the injury when
he was sacked on the Jaguars' first offensive
play of the game—a play that was nullified
because of a penalty on the Cardinals. However,
Leftwich remained in the game for four more
plays before hobbling off. He later was carted
to the locker room, and the team announced he
wouldn't return due to an ankle sprain.
Del Rio announced the bad news
during his postgame interview.
With Leftwich out, the Jaguars
turned to backup David Garrard, who rushed for
a touchdown and 61 yards while passing for another
115. A 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown
and Greg Jones rushing for 78 yards and another
score keyed the Jaguars' victory.
In addition to putting a serious
dent in any aspirations the Jaguars had to challenge
the Colts for the AFC South title, the loss
of Leftwich for at least four games sucks the
fantasy value right out of Jacksonville's receiving
corps. Ernest Wilford and Matt Jones entered
the Arizona game both on rolls, but Garrard
locked in on Jimmy Smith and mustered just the
115 passing yards.
For his career, Garrard has as
many rushing scores (four) as passing touchdowns
and has never thrown for more than 198 yards
in a game.
