T.J. Duckett,
RB, Atlanta: WE knew the Raiders were gonna
blow this one. Apparently they were all our partying
late on Friday night, got in for bedcheck..and then
took off again. This game was doomed to be a blowout
before kickoff. How bout Jim Mora for coach of the
year candidate. Atlanta Running back T.J. Duckett
became a hero for countless Fantasy Football owners
this week, as he rushed for 65 yards on 12 carries
and scored a Falcons' team-record four touchdowns
in a 35-10 win over the Oakland Raiders. The former
Michigan State workhorse found the end zone twice
in the second quarter (28, 2), scored on a 4-yard
run in the third, and then broke the record with
a 1-yard score in the final stanza. The 65-yard
performance was his best this season, and the four
scores matched his total for the first 13 weeks
combined.

Sunday Notes I Scribbled
Down
Did things go your way in week
14? If you had Carson Palmer as your starting quarterback
and you play in a fantasy league that employs team
quarterback, you are positively giddy. After leaving
the game with a sprained knee, Palmer's backup,
Jon Kitna\, threw a touchdown pass. In addition,
punter Kyle Larson took a direct snap from center
on a field goal attempt and rushed 11 yards for
a touchdown—which will officially be scored
as a quarterback rushing touchdown. Clearly, the
fantasy football Gods were looking kindly upon your
team in the above scenario. However, there were
undeniably a number of fantasy owners that were
on the short end of some of the following plays.
One of these plays involved Jacksonville's Byron
Leftwich. The rocket-launching quarterback may have
had 242 yards and two passing touchdowns in the
Jaguars' easy win over the Chicago Bears, but he
was denied a third touchdown pass when a holding
penalty nullified a scoring strike to tight end
Todd Yoder. Later in the afternoon, St. Louis Rams'
wide receiver Isaac Bruce appeared to score on a
dazzling 52-yard reception, but alas, this score
was called back because of a holding penalty. After
this play was taken back, it reduced Bruce's statistics
down to a paltry 27 receiving yards for the day.
Finally, fantasy owners with Green Bay Packers'
running back Ahman Green were most likely cheering
wildly as they watched Ahman galloping his way into
the end zone on an apparent 79-yard touchdown run.
Wait just a minute…there's a flag on the play
back upfield. To nobody's surprise, it was a holding
penalty against Packers' offensive lineman, Adam
Timmerman, eliminating the score. Because of this
play, it marked the fifth consecutive game in which
Ahman had failed to cross the stripe. Amazingly,
Green's seven touchdowns in 2004 have been scored
in just three games. This isn't the type of consistency
that you're hoping for from your starting running
back and is suitable fodder for why backup running
back Najeh Davenport could actually be the Packers'
starting tailback when the 2005 season commences.
Don't laugh, it's very plausible, as those who witnessed
his only start of the season—a 178-yard, one
touchdown effort against the St. Louis Rams in week
12—would attest that he was impressive.

HEAP IS
BACK
Oh ya...and
I started him over Wiggins in one league (just braggin)
In recent weeks,
Kyle Boller's fantasy statistics have blossomed
more than former "Life Goes On" actress
Kellie Martin (Corky's sister). If you haven't seen
her lately, trust us—it's all good. Real good.
What were we talking about again? Oh yes, the Ravens'
passing offense. It seems that tight end Todd Heap's
presence on the gridiron was all Boller needed to
post the most prolific touchdown-passing day of
his young career. Actually, Boller probably also
needed the porous New York Giants' defense in order
to turn in the game that he did, but you get the
point. Be that as it may, it was still impressive,
nonetheless, how Boller was able to guide the Ravens'
offense to an easy victory, keeping Baltimore alive
in the competitive AFC playoff race. Heap, who returned
to the field in week 13 after missing eight games,
had modest statistics: three receptions for 22 yards.
In week 14, however, he was a force to reckon with,
catching five passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns.
One of the best tight ends in football, Heap could,
in the final three games of the season, become to
the Ravens' offense what Antonio Gates has meant
to the San Diego Chargers' offense. With All Pro
running back Jamal Lewis still not 100% (with the
Ravens up 20 at halftime, Jamal didn't have a single
touch in the second half) and splitting carries
with Chester Taylor, Heap's importance to the Baltimore
offense cannot be understated. To boot he has regained
his top form for his owners just in time for the
most important part of the fantasy playoff schedule.
Double
D
While many owners
don't consider him an elite back, Davis has quietly
been posting fine numbers recently. Davis has scored
at least once in each game since Week 9, and he
is clearly the most dependable player on the Houston
roster. Right now, Davis is a must-start player,
because he shows up every week and delivers good
numbers, regardless of the opposition. Many owners
debate every week whether to start another top RB,
or Davis. Unless your other RB is Shaun Alexander
or LaDainian Tomlinson, you shouldn't bench Davis.
By the
Numbers
Two pairs of
quarterback brothers started today — the first
time that has happened in NFL history. Everyone
knows about the Mannings — Peyton in Indianapolis
and Eli with the New York Giants. The lesser-known
duo is the McCowns. Josh returned to his starting
spot for Arizona, and Luke will made his second
straight start for Cleveland. I'd give the nudge
right now to brothers Manning....but only because
of BIG BRO.
Top 10
Week 14 Fantasy Football Studs
1. T.J. Duckett,
RB, Falcons (12 carries, 65 yards, 4 TDs): Atlanta
has its running game going nicely, and Duckett finally
lived up to those hopes that he'd be pile up TDs
at the goal line. He did that Sunday, as well as
running over Raiders en route to a 28-yard score.
Just imagine what he might do if he got the 25 carries
Warrick Dunn got. Personally I think its BUNK that
he doesn't. Dunn is old.
2. Domanick Davis, RB, Texans (23 carries, 128
yards, 1 TD; 6 catches, 73 yards): Over the last
6 weeks he's quietly emerging as one of fantasy's
top players. Davis helped expose the spotty Colts'
defense, and he is coming on nicely down the stretch.
Then again, he might not have so many receiving
yards (at least this week) if David Carr looked
to Andre Johnson more.
3. Kyle Boller, QB, Ravens (18-34, 219 yards, 4
TDs; 4 carries, 19 yards, 1 lost fumble): After
a couple of bad outings, Boller found his groove
again, although playing the Giants will do that
to you; not to mention the return of the Todd Heap
of old. He might be worth watching if you're desperate
for a QB next week as he takes on the Colts. Heating
up just in time for the fantasy playoffs.
4. Matt Hasselbeck, QB, Seahawks (23-34, 334 yards,
3 TDs, 2 INTs; 1 carry, 13 yards): This game and
the Monday nighter against Dallas are showing that
the old Hasselbeck may be back. He is a flat our
streaky passer, and for the last 8 quarters, man
he's been on a streak. I'd stick him in the lineup
for the next game for sure. But watch the weather
in New York on Sunday.
5. Tatum Bell, RB, Broncos (17 carries, 123 yards,
2 TDs; 1 catch, -6 yards): Another week, another
running back eating up yards behind Denver's offensive
line. Bell was going to be worked into the offense
slowly this week after a nice outing against the
Chargers, but then he erupted after an early Reuben
Droughns fumble. But Bell injured his shoulder late,
so there may not be a passing of the torch just
yet.
6. Brian Griese, QB, Buccaneers (36-50, 392 yards,
3 TDs, 3 INTs; 1 carry, 3 yards, 1 lost fumble):
The interceptions would eventually doom him, but
Griese did put up a ton of passing yards to make
for last week's so-so statistical game in the rout
of the Falcons. He still finds ways to put up stats,
though, and he even got Joey Galloway involved again.
With Clayton cooling off Griese and Galloway seem
to be catching on at a good time.
7. Deuce McAllister, RB, Saints (30 carries, 83
yards, 2 TDs; 4 catches, 37 yards): It's about time
that he had a good game. Did you see the goal line
carry he had?? He was not going to stopped and plowed
thru a couple cowboys. I suppose his production
will depend on how New Orleans does down the stretch,
and you have no idea what will happen there.
8. Willis McGahee, RB, Bills (27 carries, 105 yards,
2 TDs; 2 catches, 12 yards): He may have played
his college ball at Miami, but bad weather isn't
going to slow him down. He is balling bigtime right
now. Too bad Buffalo is starting this run so late.
9. Maurice Hicks, RB, 49ers (34 carries, 139 yards,
1 TD; 5 catches, 29 yards): He was at least a marginal
choice this week with major bust Kevan Barlow out.
But Hicks is proving he really wants that starting
job. Don't get too high on him down the stretch,
though, as he faces the tough Redskins and Bills
defenses after this. Both of these teams are shutting
down the run.
10. Clinton Portis, RB, Redskins (23 carries, 80
yards, 2 TDs; 4 catches, 22 yards): He's well over
1,000 yards for the season, but only in the past
few weeks does it seem that he's played like an
elite back. But Washington's offense is waking up
a bit, so he should be good during the fantasy playoffs.
At least as a #2.
Top 10 Week 14 Fantasy Football Duds
Eli Manning, QB, Giants (4-18, 27 yards, 2 TDs,
1 lost fumble): Is it just me or does he seem to
get worse every week? The Ravens can do that to
you. Kurt Warner came in late in the fourth quarter
and played reasonably well in mop-up duty, but he
probably won't be playing next week.
Marcus Robinson, WR, Vikings (1 catch, 13 yards):
With Randy Moss back, you can never be too sure
who will put up stats, other than No. 84 himself.
Chad Pennington, QB, Jets (17-31, 189 yards, 3
INTs; 4 carries, 16 yards): The Steelers defense
can do this to even the best of quarterbacks. But
I don't bet on Chad getting more than 200 passing
yards ever.
Vinny Testaverde, QB, Cowboys (14-35, 167 yards,
1 INT; 1 carry, 2 yards, 1 lost fumble): So much
for that decent Monday night outing. He looked 49
again.
Andre Johnson, WR, Texans (3 catches, 34 yards):
He's a stud receiver. Will someone throw to him,
please? Especially against the Colts. I had him
in in two leagues. In both leagues I'm wishing I'd
played someone else. Any pity for me?
Joey Harrington, QB, Lions (5-22, 47 yards): How
long can he keep testing Detroit's patience? At
this point, you're best off avoiding anyone in the
Lions passing game. Even Roy Williams has cooled
off. This is slowly turning into a RUNFIRST team,
behind rookie Kevin Jones.
Javon Walker, WR, Packers (3 catches, 26 yards):
This time, he couldn't steal a late TD catch. Donald
Driver got all the big receptions late. I was excited
as I started him over Jimmy Smith and Bennett in
1 league.
William Green, RB, Browns (11 carries, 5 yards,
1 lost fumble): The Bills' run defense is tough,
but this is ridiculous. His longest run was 8 yards,
meaning he was 10 for -3 yards on his other carries.
Time to go back to your spare time habit Willy.
Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Steelers (9-19, 144 yards,
2 INTs): Pittsburgh fans may want him as the quarterback
during the stretch run, but Big Ben doesn't do much
for fantasy owners. Hines Ward's two-catch, 38-yard
performance helps attest to that. 7 weekly NFL rookie
honors won't keep him off the DUD list this week.
Chris Chandler, QB, Rams (16-29, 243 yards, 1 TD,
6 INTs): He was a calculated risk for anyone who
lost Marc Bulger. Unfortunately, he ran into a Panthers
defense that's finally decided to wake up. But six
interceptions? 6 ? That is Brutal.
Antonio Gates, TE, Chargers (1 catch, 17 yards):
One Catch? One? Come On!!! Tony whats up with that??
Oh well I guess even the best of receivers can have
their off-days. He felt bad for Gonzo for taking
over the tight end king's mantle.
Now get back to work!!!
