Racing: Triple Tiara for Bushfire?
Bushfire
is on her way to the Triple Tiara, that’s
for 3-year-old fillies on the New York racing
circuit. Bushfire added a win Saturday in the
Mother Goose Stakes to the win she posted in
the Acorn Stakes earlier this Belmont meet and
now needs to win the Coaching Club American
Oaks also at Belmont on July 22d to wear the
Tiara.
Bushfire paid $ 8.60 in
the $250,000 Mother Goose as she came from behind
to win by ¾ of a length in 149.4 for
the mile and an eighth. Pine Island was second
and Ready to Please was third. Jockey Edgar
Prado rides Bushfire, what a twist of fate if
Prado gets the Tiara after his heartbreak in
the Triple Crown.
The handicap horses were
in action this weekend and Invasor defeated
a group of older horses in the Grade I Suburban
Handicap ($400,000) at Belmont Park. Invasor,
coming off a big win in the Pimlico Special,
came from behind and won by 4 ½ lengths.
Ridden by 18-year-old Fernando
Jara, Invasor, the Argentine-bred, has now won
seven of his eight career starts. Invasor’s
next start if all is well will be at the Spa
in the $750,000 Whitney Stakes on August 5th.
That will be just one of the daily stakes races
at Saratoga this meet, here are some of the
“big” stakes races upcoming at the
Spa:
The Schuyerville Stakes
$100,000 for 2YO Fillies on the 26th of July,
the Sanford Stakes Grade II for 2YO at 6F on
July 27th, and the first Saturday of the meet
July 29th will feature the Diana Stakes for
the turf runners at 1 1/8 miles for a whopping
$500,000!
The Jim Dandy Stakes is
for half a million for 3-year-olds in which
we will get our second look at the triple crown
horses and a few new 3-year-olds who will add
to the mix of the likes of Jazil, Bernardini,
Bluegrass Cat and the boys.
FURLONGS:
A white filly will be put up for auction at
the Fasig-Tipton yearling sales in Lexington,
Kentucky this summer. Only 5 white racehorses
were registered in 2005. The owners are Nancy
and Mike Mazzoni and they will consign the filly
to be auctioned through the Darby Dan Agency.
She will be HIP#41, so if you have $30,000 or
so, you can make a bid.
LEFT
COAST: Del Mar where the surf meets the
turf, opens on July 19th with the Oceanside
Stakes, and will close with the Del Mar Futurity
for 2-year-olds on September 6th and give us
our first look at the Derby hopefuls for 2007.
The famous Del Mar Handicap
will be run on August 27th and usually has some
of the top older horses on the planet.
BELMONT:
I’ve been in Vegas for the last few days
and my players at Belmont tell me the track
is favoring come-from-behind horses…so
if you like the speed be careful.
It seems to be just the
opposite at Hollywood Park, the speed is winning.
Now the dog days of summer turn into the horse
days at tracks all over North America. Two weeks
to Del Mar and Saratoga, I can’t wait!
