The defending Super Bowl
champion Pittsburgh Steelers (2-3 SU & ATS)
showed last week that they are still a team to
be reckoned with. The revitalized Steelers seek
their first road win of the season Sunday, and
try to contain the potent rushing attack of the
Atlanta Falcons (3-2 SU & ATS) when the teams
meet at the Georgia Dome. Playing on carpet has
been kind to Pittsburgh backers where they are
5-1 ATS in their last 6 games on turf.
The Steelers are 4-1 ATS
in their last 5 games following a SU win and they
are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a
cover victory. But in order to take the cash again
this week, Pittsburgh's defense must stop the
Falcons' rushing attack. The Steelers have done
a good job defending the run so far this season,
allowing opponents 78.4 yards on the ground. Offensively,
Pittsburgh ranks eighth with 125.8 rushing ypg.
Atlanta already has 1,160
rushing yards this season, nearly 400 more than
any other team in the league. The Falcons' average
of 232.0 rushing ypg, if it holds up, would be
the second-best single-season rushing offense
in NFL history behind the 1936 Detroit Lions (240.4).
Last week, Atlanta had another
big ground game with 223 yards. That may bode
well for their investors considering the Falcons
are 35-5-2 ATS in their last 42 games after accumulating
more than 150 yards rushing in their previous
game.
Pittsburgh is 0-2 SU on the
road this season and have managed a total of just
13 points and 94 rushing yards in those losses.
The Steelers are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 road
games.
These teams have not met
since a 34-34 tie at Pittsburgh in 2002. In that
game, Michael Vick passed for 294 yards and ran
for 52 more in that game, the only NFL contest
to finish in a tie in the last nine years.
In recent years, Week 7 has been a profitable
period for both clubs, where the Steelers are
4-0 ATS and the Falcons are 6-2 ATS in their last
8 games.
Bottom line, if the Steelers can contain the Falcons
ground game they have a legitimate shot at a SU
win and cover. But if Atlanta continues to run
wild they take the cash.
