Eagles surge to top of NFC East
It was touted as the toughest
division to win according to many preseason pundits.
And now the Eagles are flying above the pack.
The NFC East has been a dog's
breakfast in New York, Dallas and Washington,
but Donovan McNabb has powered Philadelphia to
a 4-1 start and a little breathing room atop the
division after five weeks. All four teams went
head-to-head on Sunday and the returns look very
good for the Eagles.
McNabb exacted a measure
of revenge for last season's nightmare by leading
the Eagles past the Cowboys 38-24, a win punctuated
by Lito Sheppard's 102-yard interception return
of a lame Drew Bledsoe pass, and a ton of questions
were raised in Dallas in its wake.
But there is nothing but
answers in Philadelphia, where the Eagles are
also 4-1 against the spread. McNabb leads the
NFL in passing yards with 1602 yards, completing
103-of-176 attempts for 11 touchdowns and 1 measly
interception. He also ranks third overall with
a 107.2 QB rating, and is on pace for 5000 yards
passing and 35 touchdown tosses.
Dallas is a wobbly 2-2 SU
(and 2-2 ATS), with wins over the Redskins and
the Tennessee Titans, and a Week 1 loss at Jacksonville
on their slate. Owens has been a massive pill-popping
distraction and Bledsoe has looked pedestrian
at best.
The Giants (2-2, 2-2 ATS)
received marquee performances from Eli Manning,
Tiki Barber and Amani Toomer while stifling Washington
19-3 on Sunday, but that would have been their
first win of the season except for the Eagles'
meltdown in Week 2 that allowed the G-Men to post
a stunning 30-24 OT victory. In their defense,
the Giants have lost to a pair of pretty good
teams in Indianapolis and Seattle, but New York's
best play is clearly yet to come.
And Washington? A blowout
win over the weak Texans and an OT squeaker over
Jacksonville are unimpressive against two divisional
setbacks already to Dallas and New York and a
Week 1 loss to the Vikings. The erratic Skins
have a tough road ahead of them at 2-3 (2-3 ATS),
especially with key cogs Mark Brunell and Clinton
Portis looking like mere shadows of their former
selves.
All four teams will be in
action on Sunday with Philadelphia heading down
to New Orleans to face the rejuvenated Saints,
and the Giants at Atlanta to face Michael Vick
and the Falcons. Dallas will host David Carr and
the state rival Texans, and Washington welcomes
Tennessee.
It's not a stretch
to think all four NFC East will post victories
in those matchups, which means none of the three
chasers would gain any ground in Week 6 on the
red-hot Eagles.
