CAMP OBJECTIVES:
One of three first-time head coaches in the NFC North,
the Vikings' Brad Childress might be in the least
enviable position of the trio. His depth chart at
quarterback consists of 38-year-old Brad Johnson,
failed former Eagles No. 2 Mike McMahon, raw second-round
draft pick Tarvaris Jackson (Alabama State), and J.T.
O'Sullivan, another career backup. The running back
position is no less secure, as neither of the top
two starting candidates, Mewelde Moore or Chester
Taylor, has ever carried the full-time rushing load
in the NFL. At least free agent pickups in fullback
Tony Richardson (Chiefs) and guard Steve Hutchinson
(Seahawks) will provide that duo some blockers to
run behind. Elsewhere on offense, Childress needs
one of four receivers - Marcus Robinson, Troy Williamson,
Koren Robinson, or Travis Taylor - to step up and
prove he has No. 1 ability. Did we mention defense?
Former first-round picks Kenechi Udeze and Erasmus
James must emerge and become effective edge pass rushers,
rookie linebacker and first-round Chad Greenway needs
to step into an immediate starting role, and the secondary
needs to prove that it will be okay without longtime
staple Corey Chavous (Rams) at strong safety. New
kicker and former Packer Ryan Longwell will look mighty
strange in a Vikings uniform, but will provide the
Minnesota field goal game with some stability.
