    REPORT DATES:
Rookies July 27th, Veterans July 27th SITE: Detroit
Lions Training Facility, Allen Park, MI CAMP OBJECTIVES:
New Lions head coach Rod Marinelli will be awfully
busy during his first training camp on the job. Jon
Kitna has already been handed the starting quarterback
role over fellow free agent acquisition Josh McCown,
but there is reason to believe that the younger McCown
could come out of camp with the job if he outplays
the veteran. Marinelli and offensive coordinator Mike
Martz also have to determine whether they can find
some reinforcements to prop up an offensive line that
was horrendous a year ago, and need to see whether
Kevin Jones will buy into the program and become a
consistent NFL running back. Perhaps more interesting
than any of those issues is the matter of Roy Williams,
Charles Rogers, and Mike Williams, the three former
first- round receivers who have all been inconsistent
and could make a giant leap within Martz's offensive
system. The defensive side of the ball is not without
intriguing storylines either. Rookies such as linebacker
Ernie Sims (Florida State) and safety Daniel Bullocks
(Nebraska) need to progress quickly and emerge as
starters in order for this group to thrive. In addition,
the unit's talented holdovers like cornerback Dre'
Bly and tackle Shaun Rogers must adjust to both Marinelli's
approach and new coordinator Donnie Henderson's scheme
                            in short order.
