    REPORT DATES:
Rookies July 27th, Veterans July 27th SITE: San Francisco
49ers Complex, Santa Clara, CA CAMP OBJECTIVES:
Second-year Niners coach Mike Nolan needs to see some
major camp progress out of quarterback Alex Smith,
who threw just one touchdown pass versus 11 interceptions
last season. Smith will be working with a bunch of
new principles at the skill positions, including rookie
tight end Vernon Davis (Maryland) and wideouts Antonio
Bryant (Browns), Bryan Gilmore (Dolphins) and Brandon
Williams (Wisconsin). Nolan and new offensive coordinator
Norv Turner needs the line, which now includes aging
road-grader Larry Allen at one of the guards, to come
around as well. At running back, the team will have
to determine whether it should be Frank Gore's show
or if Kevan Barlow can be counted on to carry the
load. The defense is in something of a transition
as well, with high-profile former starters Julian
Peterson (Seahawks), Andre Carter (Redskins), and
Ahmed Plummer (released) all departed. Rookie outside
linebacker Manny Lawson (N.C. State) will be asked
to help provide a pass rush and take the pressure
off of a young secondary largely responsible for the
NFL's worst passing defense of 2005.
