WSOP Main Event - July
11, 2006
The 2006 World Series of
Poker starts July 28th at the Rio Hotel in Las
Vegas and the excitement is building.
Become
the 2007 WSOP champion by playing at VIP.com
Poker.
There are around 9,000
people ready to pony up the $10,000 entry fee
and try to instantly become a celebrity. That
enticement, plus an estimated $10,000,000 first
place prize makes this the most glamerous poker
event ever.
WSOP History
The World Series of Poker
has been around since 1970, although there has
been a limited amount of fanfare outside of
Las Vegas. Three time champions, Johnny Moss
and Stu Ungar were household names in poker
circles, but to your average sports fan, they
were virtual unknowns.
That all changed in 2003,
when an unknown named Chris Moneymaker defied
all the odds to win the championship and the
$2.5 million prize. Moneymaker qualified to
play in the World Series of Poker on the internet.
That showed the public that truly anyone can
win the event.
To show the effect of the
Moneymaker win, in 2003 there were 839 people
who plunked down the $10,000 entry fee for the
main event. That number tripled in 2004 to 2,576
people.
The 2004 prize pool was
$24.2 million, the biggest prize in sports according
to the organizers. The main event was won by
Greg "Fossilman" Raymer another unknown
from the
internet world.
Raymer won $5 million,
and quickly quit his job as a patent attorney.
He is now doing very well as a professional
poker player, including finishing 25th in the
2005 WSOP main event.
Last year, Joseph Hachem
defeated 5,618 players to win the main event.
His victory earned him a record breaking $7.5
million.
2006 Event
The big question for this
main event is whether the winner will be another
unknown or a poker professional.
Some of the favorites include
Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Howard Lederer,
Gus Hansen, Phil Hellmuth, Barry Greenstein,
Jesus Ferguson and Johnny Chan.
Of those players, only
Hellmuth (1989), Ferguson (2000), and Johnny
Chan (1987 and 1988) have won the main event.
Chan is the last player to win the event in
consecutive years, a feat we may never see again
with the number of competitors skyrocketing.
