NFL
Early Odds - November 21, 2006

5) Philadelphia (+9) at Indianapolis
This game was handpicked
to move to Sunday night as it was deemed better
than the Chicago at New England contest. That
seemed like a curious decision at best when it
was made. Now that Eagles’ quarterback,
Donovan McNabb is out for the season with a torn
ACL, the move looks horrendous.
Philadelphia (5-5)
will likely turn to backup, Jeff Garcia to save
their playoff hopes. Indianapolis (9-1) is coming
off their first loss of the season, but they are
still in great shape to get home field advantage
throughout the playoffs. The Colts have only won
two games all year by more than seven points,
so this one should be interesting. Week
12 NFL Point Spread Eagles +9
4) New Orleans (+3) at Atlanta
It is hard to get too excited
about any game involving two NFC teams because
the whole conference is mired in mediocrity except
for the Bears. This game has a lot of intrigue
as the Michael Vick experiment is reaching its
critical mass, and we are about to find out whether
he should be leading this team into the future.
The Falcons (5-5) have
lost three straight games, and two were against
Detroit and Cleveland (5-15 combined record).
The Saints (6-4) are not doing much better having
lost three out of four games, and their critics
have been waiting for them to collapse all season.
Note that this is a revenge game for Atlanta,
who got smoked 23-3 in the first game back in
the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina.
Week 12 NFL Point
Spread Saints +3
3) Pittsburgh (+2.5) at Baltimore
Pittsburgh (4-6) is the Freddy
Krueger of the NFL, you just can’t kill
them. The Steelers have won two straight games
to keep their playoff hopes alive, and every win
gives them more and more confidence. This is a
big contest on the road for them, and they can’t
win if Ben Roethlisberger keeps turning the ball
over.
Baltimore is 8-2 and has
established themselves as an elite AFC team. The
Ravens’ schedule gets tough after this game
with road contests at Cincinnati, Kansas City
and Pittsburgh. If the Ravens take care of business,
they will head into the playoffs as AFC North
champions and possibly with a first round bye.
Week 12 NFL Point Spread Eagles +2.5
2) Denver (E) at Kansas City
This is one of three Thanksgiving
Day games and the first game broadcast by the
NFL Network. The other two Thanksgiving games
are Miami (-2.5) at Detroit and Tampa (+11) at
Dallas. The Denver and Kansas City contest is
a night game, so hopefully you are not too tired
out from the massive amount of turkey you are
sure to inhale.
Looking at this game, Denver
comes (7-3) in limping after losing to San Diego
at home. Now, they must rebound physically and
mentally on a very short week. Kansas City (6-4)
survived Oakland last Sunday, and they expect
quarterback Trent Green to be much sharper in
his second game back from his concussion.
Week 12 NFL Point Spread Denver vs KC (Even)
1) Chicago (+3) at New England
Chicago (9-1) once again
showed they are the class of the NFC with a 10-0
win at the New York Jets. The Bears were able
to win despite only getting 121 passing yards
from quarterback Rex Grossman, and they must play
better offensively this week in their third road
game in a row.
New England (7-3) has
a strange problem on their hands. On the road,
they are lights-out at 5-0, but they have struggled
at home at just 2-3. Two more caution notes for
New England: The Patriots have had trouble this
year with good opponents, and the Bears are the
only other NFL team undefeated (5-0) on the road.
Week 12 NFL Point
Spread Bears +3
