The
Cover Corner - November 17, 2006
by: VIP.com
By Michael Licalsi:
The Cover Corner column adds four more selections
for college and the NFL. This is a huge week in
college football with Ohio State and Michigan.
I do wish that was the Saturday night game, but
I would watch it at 6:00 in the morning if I had
to.
Editor’s Note: The
selections in this column are purely the opinion
of the writer, and are not being endorsed by any
parties.
California (+5.5) at USC
Just a few weeks ago, most
had written off the Trojans from a shot at the
national title. Now, they are ranked third in
the BCS and are right in the chase.
USC (8-1) comes into this
Pac-10 heavyweight fight 8-2 against the spread
(ATS) in their last 10 games as 3.5 to 10 point
favorites. California (8-2) is 6-1-1 ATS in their
last eight games as road dogs.
This is how I see it. USC
has a new lease on life, and they know they might
be playing for the national championship if they
win their last three games. The Golden Bears have
a very good offense, but we all know their defense
can use work, especially against the passing game.
Cal is 93rd in the nation
in total defense, while Southern California is
20th. If USC didn’t have a shot at the title
game, then I might give Cal a shot in this game.
However, this USC squad has played in a lot of
huge games over the last few years, and I am punching
my ticket with Coach Pete Carroll.
Pick: USC
New England (-5.5) at Green
Bay
What are the chances that
the Patriots (6-3) lose three straight games with
Tom Brady at the helm? Not likely. We know that
both of these teams rest squarely on the shoulders
of their superstar quarterbacks.
After watching and listening
to Coach Belichick this week, I have to think
the Patriots will be ready to take someone to
the woodshed. Green Bay (4-5) has stepped up this
season compared to last, but the Packers are 1-3
ATS at home, while the Patriots are 4-0 ATS on
the road. Green Bay has had a nice little run,
but I have to pick New England to bounce back
and win this convincingly.
Pick New England
Oakland (+9.5) at Kansas City
The big return of quarterback
Trent Green this week will be huge for Kansas
City (5-4). Damon Huard played well, but Green
is in a different league all together. Oakland
is 2-7, and when the captain of your team is Randy
Moss, you know you’re in trouble. Oakland
is 0-4 on the road straight up, and 1-3 ATS.
This was a heated rivalry
a long time ago, but now it is more like the circus
coming to town. Oakland’s defense has played
pretty well, but I look for a defensive letdown
from the Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium. Combine
that with the Chiefs coming off a loss last week
in Miami, and you will see a double-digit rebound
win.
Pick: Kansas City
Seattle (-3.5) at San Francisco
Let me see, Shaun Alexander
returns to the line-up, and Matt Hasselbeck may
play as well. This should make the 49ers’
faithful very nervous.
Seattle has shown that their
back-up skill position players are pretty good.
Even if the returning stars don’t play many
minutes, this Seattle (6-3) team is trending up
in most statistical categories and riding high
as the division leader. The 49ers record is much
better than expected (4-5), but I look for the
bubble to burst a bit this Sunday, and a wonderful
day for the Seattle offense.
Pick: Seattle
