The first Saturday college
game was Wake Forest getting 16.5 points at home
from Clemson, and losing 27-17. Wake was 5-0 heading
into this game, although not against the greatest
competition. It was thought they had a good chance
to pull off the upset against a Clemson team that
is overrated on the road.
Wake Forest actually led
the game 17-3 after three quarters, but were upended
by a furious Clemson rally. Still, this was a
solid selection.
The second pick was Michigan
giving 15 points to Michigan State, and winning
31-13. Michigan led 7-0 after one quarter, 17-0
at the half, and 31-7 after three quarters. The
Spartans downward spiral continued as expected,
and Wolverines fans got an added bonus when the
Detroit Tigers eliminated the mighty New York
Yankees.
Baltimore (+4) at Denver
Denver is 2-1 on the year
and 1-0 at home. The Broncos’ defense has
been stout, going a team-record 11 quarters without
allowing a touchdown before New England scored
a meaningless TD in Week 3. It was the longest
such streak to start a season in the NFL in 64
years.
Denver has won 11 straight
regular season games at Invesco Field, although
they did lose to the Steelers at home in the AFC
championship game last year. The Denver streak
does include a 12-10 victory over Baltimore last
December.
The Ravens are 4-0 for the
first time since the franchise moved to Baltimore.
The hot start has been thanks to a tough defense
and the veteran leadership of quarterback, Steve
McNair. McNair has engineered consecutive game-winning
drives to keep the Ravens unbeaten.
With the Broncos defense
being the way it is, Baltimore will need to do
more then hope for a come-from-behind win, and
I just don’t see it happening.
This is a redemption game
for Denver quarterback, Jake Plummer. He wants
to show the world that he is still a force to
be reckoned with, and not a “could have
been”. Meanwhile, this is the night that
McNair finally runs out of magic tricks.
I like the home field advantage
and the Broncos on Monday night.
Pick: Denver
