Ohio State can now say they
played their two best games of the year on the
road. Earlier in Week 2, the Buckeyes played almost
flawlessly in a 24-7 win over then number two,
Texas.
Against Iowa, quarterback
Troy Smith helped his Heisman chances immensely
with 186 yards passing and four touchdowns. This
game was won on the ground though, with 214 rushing
yards. That helped Ohio State dominate the time
of possession, 40 minutes to 20.
Elsewhere around the Top
10, there were no major upsets, but there were
some scares.
Third ranked USC had to hold
on for dear life to win at Washington State, 28-22.
Washington State scored a touchdown with four
minutes left, but failed on a “Hail Mary”
pass on the last play of the game for the win.
USC was without star receiver, Dwayne Jarrett,
and you have to think the score wouldn’t
have been as close with him in the lineup.
Fifth ranked Florida needed
two late touchdowns in the fourth quarter to secure
a 28-13 win over Alabama. Despite their late collapse,
you have to give the Crimson Tide credit for making
a game of it at “The Swamp”.
10th ranked Georgia survived
for the second week in a row, winning at Ole Miss,
14-9. Last week against Colorado, the Bulldogs
squeaked out a 14-13 win at home. It will be interesting
to see if they fall out of the Top 10 despite
being 5-0.
Our weekly Notre Dame update
had the Irish beating Purdue, 35-21. Brady Quinn
had 316 yards passing, two touchdowns, and no
interceptions.
The upset of the weekend
was #11 Virginia Tech losing to #24 Georgia Tech,
38-27. Georgia Tech was almost a double digit
underdog, but it didn’t matter as they jumped
out to a 21-0 lead on the road. The Yellow Jackets
will make a big jump up in the rankings this week.
Taking a sneak peek at this
coming weekend, Texas is at Oklahoma in a Big
12 match-up that everyone circled on their calendars
before the start of the year. Unfortunately, both
teams have one loss, but it will still be a great
one.
Oregon is at California
for a Pac-10 battle on ABC’s Saturday Night
Football. Tennessee is at Georgia im an SEC showdown,
as well as LSU at Florida. Finally, Michigan State
is at Michigan in one of the countries greatest
rivalries.
