You see, Notre Dame lost
at home to Michigan, 47-21. That was not one of
those close, down to the wire losses. It was an
old fashioned butt whipping right in their own
backyard, and it could ultimately keep the Irish
out of the national championship game.
Of course, we are a long
way from that, and the Irish still have a shot
at the national title if they run the table. The
other issue for Brady Quinn is that his three
interception performance really hurts his Heisman
Trophy chances. At the very least, he can no longer
be considered the front runner even with the Irish
hype machine in full glory.
Elsewhere around college
football, Louisville dismantled Miami at home,
31-7. The Cardinals have already lost running
back Michael Bush, and now their quarterback Brian
Brohm is out 4-6 weeks with a thumb injury. That
makes this win bitter sweet.
In a Pac 10 and Big 12 match-up,
USC beat Nebraska 28-10. In the SEC, Florida had
an inspiring, 21-20 comeback win at Tennessee.
Also in the SEC, Auburn held on to beat LSU, 7-3.
Auburn will move into the top three of the national
rankings along with Ohio Sate and USC.
Looking ahead to this weekend,
Wisconsin is at Michigan in a Big 10 battle, both
teams are 3-0. Notre Dame tries to bounce back
against Michigan State, and avenge a 44-41 loss
to them last year. Two other games to keep an
eye out on are USC at Arizona and Penn State at
Ohio State.

Switching gears to the NFL,
it was not the most exciting group of games on
paper, but a number of them had exciting finishes.
New England almost blew a
24-0 lead over the Jets, but held on for a 24-17
win. The Patriots are all alone in first place
in the AFC East, and two games over heralded Miami.
The Dolphins are 0-2 after losing 16-6 versus
Buffalo.
Another surprising 0-2 team
is Carolina. They have been playing this year
without injured receiver, Steve Smith, and it
shows. The Panthers had a crushing 16-13 overtime
loss to Minnesota. Atlanta (2-0) is the class
of the NFC South so far this year as they beat
Tampa Bay, 14-3.
Denver almost fell to 0-2
as well, but they survived Kansas City, 9-6 in
overtime. San Diego moved to 2-0 in the AFC West
with a 40-7 romp over Tennessee. There are a lot
of bad teams in the NFL right now, and the Titans
are right at the top of the list.
The Giants get the comeback
award as they rallied from a 24-7, 4th quarter
deficit to beat Philly, 30-24 in overtime. Both
teams are now 1-1, but it was a heartbreaking
loss for the Eagles.
Finally, don’t
forget about Monday Night Football tonight. Pittsburgh
(1-0) is at Jacksonville (1-0) in what may be
the best match-up of the entire weekend. The Steelers
are currently a 2.5 point favorite at VIP.com,
as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is likely to
play after bursting his appendix two weeks ago.
