Elsewhere around the NFL,
we start in New England where the Patriots got
everything they could handle and more before prevailing
against Buffalo, 19-17. This was one of those
games that championship level teams have to win
at home, even when you are not playing your best
football.
One of the biggest upsets
of the day was Denver going into St. Louis, and
losing 18-10. St. Louis got six field goals from
kicker Jeff Wilkins, a franchise record. The Broncos
were their own worst enemy in this game with five
turnovers.
The most impressive win of
the day was Baltimore playing at Tampa Bay, and
beating the Buccaneers, 27-0. Quarterback, Steve
McNair was very steady in the pocket, but it was
the Ravens’ defense that dominated the day
with three interceptions of quarterback, Chris
Simms.
In Dallas, the Terrell Owens
era got off to a mixed start. The high-strung
wide-out had 80 yards receiving and a touchdown.
He also did not appear to have any major blowouts
with quarterback Drew Bledsoe or coach Bill Parcells.
Still, the Cowboys lost at Jacksonville, 24-17.
For the week so far, it has
been a good showing for the underdogs with an
9-4 mark against the spread. It was 8-2 before
the three late games on Sunday.
There are two more NFL games
tonight with Minnesota getting 4.5 points at Washington
and San Diego giving three points at Oakland.
VIP.com has all the latest game and proposition
odds.
Turning our attention to
the collegiate ranks, Ohio State retained their
number one ranking in the country with a 24-7
win at Texas. The most impressive part of the
game was the Buckeyes’ defense that replaced
nine starters from last year.
Notre Dame bounced back from
a lackluster performance against Georgia Tech
last week to beat Penn State, 41-17. The Irish
moved up to number two in the AP poll.
The almost upset of the week
was Florida State beating Troy, 24-17. FSU was
coming off an emotional win over Miami, and they
certainly came into this game overconfident. The
Seminoles actually trailed the game, 17-10 before
scoring two touchdowns in the last seven minutes
of the game.
Looking ahead to this weekend,
there are a number of exciting games as the season
gets ratcheted up. Michigan at Notre Dame, Miami
at Louisville, LSU at Auburn, Florida at Tennessee,
and Nebraska at USC are just part of the fantastic
selection.
