Pats
at Vikings - October 30, 2006
by: VIP.com
It has been a bizarre start to the season for both
franchises. The Raiders had few expectations when
2006 kicked off, and they lost their first five
games. They have turned it around though with successive
wins over Arizona and Super Bowl champs Pittsburgh
last week. The Seahawks,
on the other hand, won their first three games
in impressive style before losing three of their
next four.
Injuries to quarterback Matt
Hasselbeck (knee) and last year’s NFL MVP
Shaun Alexander (foot) have hit the Seahawks hard,
and they are struggling to regain lost momentum
in this crucial home game.
Seattle is 1/2 game up in
the NFC West over St. Louis, but their chances
of repeating last year’s maiden Super Bowl
appearance will be greatly reduced with a loss.
Such is the importance of this MNF clash.
Back-up quarterback, Seneca
Wallace produced a solid starting debut last week,
throwing three touchdown passes, but he was not
able to steer his team home in a 35-28 loss at
Kansas City.
Wallace is certain to face
a sterner test against a Raiders pass defense
rated the best in the NFL this season, and the
fact no one has stepped up to replace the dynamic
Alexander won’t make his task any easier.
Oakland has built their mini-revival
on a strong defense, conceding just 22 points
in the past two weeks. The Raiders have been having
quarterback problems of their own, with playcaller
Aaron Brooks sidelined through injury, and replaced
by the inexperienced Andrew Walter.
Walter’s stats aren’t
pretty reading, he has completed only 47.3% of
his passes, thrown nine interceptions versus three
touchdowns, and has been sacked a whopping 28
times this season.
As a result, the Raiders
have the worst ranked offense in the NFL, and
haven’t scored an offensive touchdown in
four of their seven games. Their unlikely 20-13
victory over the Steelers last week came from
their aggressive defense, which resulted in two
interceptions being returned for touchdowns, one
a memorable 100 yard effort by Chris Carr.
While the Seahawks have missed
their two offensive weapons in Alexander and Hasselbeck,
their defense has been a let-down in recent weeks.
Game Summary:
Once traditional rivals,
these teams haven’t met since 2002, when
the Raiders finished convincing 31-17 winners.
The stats make interesting
reading for this one. For starters, the home side
has won each of the last eight games. The Raiders
have lost their last four MNF games, and also
haven’t won on the road this season.
Despite all that, an upset
is in the cards if the Raiders can maintain their
aggressive defense of recent weeks. But with a
vocal home crowd behind them, the depleted Seahawks
could certainly still come through.
