A look at every projected
starting quarterback in the NFC, and how they
affect their team’s Super Bowl odds.
Tier I Quarterbacks
Carolina (14:1), Philadelphia
(18:1), Seattle (10:1), St. Louis (75:1)
Carolina’s Jake Delhomme
is a big game quarterback who unfortunately
had a terrible game against Seattle in the NFC
Championship.
Philadelphia’s Donovan
McNabb missed the last seven games in 2005 with
a sports hernia, but he is still an elite signal
caller even with average receivers.
Seattle’s Matt Hasselbeck
is the best quarterback in the NFC, and could
be a Super Bowl champion right now if the Seahawks
got a few breaks from the officials.
St. Louis’s
Marc Bulger only played half of last season
due to a shoulder injury, but he is a very good
quarterback when he is healthy and on the field.
Tier II Quarterbacks
Atlanta (35:1), Chicago
(20:1), Dallas (15:1), New Orleans (40:1), NY
Giants (16:1), Tampa Bay (25:1), Washington
(16:1)
Atlanta’s Michael
Vick did not progress much as a quarterback
last year, but he was still good enough to lead
his team to 11 wins two years ago.
Chicago has two pretty
good quarterbacks in Rex Grossman and Brian
Griese, but neither one is great. That is usually
the kiss of death in the NFL.
Dallas’ Drew Bledsoe
seems to play his best football under Coach
Bill Parcells. Now, he has to play his best
in the big regular season games and in the playoffs.
New Orleans’ Drew
Brees would have been a “Tier I”
quarterback if he was still with San Diego,
but going to a new system and a worse team lowers
him a notch.
The Giants’ Eli Manning
may never be as good as his brother, but that
doesn’t mean his team can’t make
it to the Super Bowl. Something Peyton and the
Colts have never done.
Washington’s Mark
Brunell had a good 2005 campaign after struggling
the two prior years. 2005 first round pick,
Jason Campbell is lurking in the shadows.
Tampa Bay’s Chris
Simms is the undisputed starter with Brian Griese
gone. Simms is still improving at just 25.5
years old, but the jury is still out on him.
Tier III Quarterbacks
Arizona (35:1), Detroit
(40:1), Green Bay (50:1), Minnesota (40:1),
San Francisco (200:1)
Arizona’s Kurt Warner
is a great guy and a good quarterback when healthy,
but he hasn’t played more than 10 games
since 2001. Matt Leinart will be starting sooner
rather than later.
Detroit has two quarterbacks
in Jon Kitna and Josh McCown who will battle
to start. Kitna has the early edge, but neither
will set the house on fire.
Green Bay’s Brett
Favre threw 20 touchdowns last year versus 29
interceptions. He seems uninterested in playing
for a poor team, and that is exactly what Green
Bay is.
Minnesota’s Brad
Johnson had a good year subbing in for an injured
Daunte Culpepper, but he will be 38 years-old
and his best days are clearly behind him.
San Francisco’s Alex
Smith was the number one pick in the 2005 draft,
but he looked like a 7th rounder at times last
year. Smith needs at least one more year to
be a serviceable starter.
