The first win of the week
was New England getting six points at Cincinnati,
and winning 38-13. The Patriots were coming off
a dreadful defeat to Denver last week, and they
were 5-0 outright coming off a loss last year.
The Patriots were an angry team, and I felt they
had a very good chance to win the game.
Cincinnati controlled the
early portion of the game, but had to settle for
two field goals. New England was buoyed by their
defensive stands and scored two touchdowns before
the half for a 14-6 lead. The game stayed close
until the fourth quarter when the Patriots pulled
away big.
The second win of the week
was Baltimore getting 2.5 points from San Diego,
and winning 16-13. It was surprising to see San
Diego as a favorite on the road, especially with
the unproven Phillip Rivers at quarterback. In
my opinion, it seemed more like a pick’em
game.
Rivers had and up down game,
as did his opposing number, Steve McNair. McNair
however, was able to engineer a game winning drive
for the second week in a row. It culminated with
a 10 yard touchdown pass to tight end, Todd Heap.
Baltimore is now one of only three undefeated
NFL teams.
The first loss of the week
was Tennessee getting 9.5 points from Dallas,
and beaten badly, 45-14. When the pick of the
Titans was made, Dallas receiver, Terrell Owens
had reportedly
just tried to commit suicide,
and it looked like there was no way he would play
on Sunday. Alas, Owens did suit up and had 88
yards receiving.
The other late issue in this
game was that Tennessee decided to start rookie
quarterback Vince Young over veteran Kerry Collins.
Young showed flashes of potential, but he was
sacked two times and intercepted twice. The Titans
had a much better chance at a cover with Collins
playing, but these things happen.
The second loss of the week
was Miami giving 3.5 points at Houston, and losing
17-15. I don’t know what else you can say
about Daunte Culpepper except he is nowhere near
the same quarterback he was early on in Minnesota.
Culpepper’s statistics were not bad for
the game, but he was sacked five times, making
it 21 on the season.
The frustrating part is that
it was obvious that Culpepper was terrible heading
into this game. Still, I thought the Miami defense
was good enough to beat this terrible Texans’
squad. Fans of the 1-3 Dolphins are ready to give
up on the season, and frankly I can’t blame
them.
