The first loss of the week
was Tampa Bay getting 5.5 points at Atlanta, and
losing 14-3. Tampa Bay was coming off a disaster
of a performance against Baltimore in Week One.
It was thought that they would at least play this
game very tight to avoid going 0-2.
However, it turned out to
be more of the same. Buccaneers’ quarterback,
Chris Simms threw for 313 yards, but had three
interceptions for the second week in a row. Atlanta
kicker, Michael Koenen missed four field goals,
and Tampa Bay had a chance for a meaningless cover
on the last play of the game, but they couldn’t
even do that right.
The second loss of the week
was Detroit getting 8.5 points at Chicago, and
losing 34-7. Chicago quarterback, Rex Grossman
looked very solid for the second consecutive week,
and Detroit’s Mike Martz offense looks nothing
like the Rams version that was an offensive juggernaut.
The only hint that Detroit
might be able to cover in this game came in the
third quarter. Detroit scored a touchdown to make
it 24-7. Then Lions’ linebacker, Boss Bailey
picked off a Rex Grossman pass and ran it in for
a 28 yard touchdown. If the play wasn’t
called back due to a defensive penalty, the spread
would have been cut to 1. Chicago then took advantage
of the situation and went on for the blowout.
The third loss of the week
was Miami giving 6.5 points to Buffalo, and losing
16-6. Miami was returning home with 10 days of
rest after their opening loss to Pittsburgh. They
needed this game not only to avoid going 0-2,
but to avoid falling into last place in the AFC
East.
Laying an egg was not the
way a team with Super Bowl aspirations is supposed
to respond.
Miami quarterback, Daunte
Culppepper looks to be the biggest obstacle to
winning. Culpepper looks indecisive in the pocket,
and is just not providing leadership on the field.
The rest of the team seems to be taking his cue.
Fortunately for the Dolphins, they get lowly Tennessee
at home this week.
The win of the week was New
Orleans giving two points at Green Bay, and winning
34-27. The Saints came back from an early 13-0
deficit. Green Bay quarterback, Brett Favre still
has a lot of pride at his advanced age, and he
was looking for redemption after a Week One blowout
loss to Chicago.
Favre played well versus
New Orleans, throwing for 340 yards and three
touchdowns, although he did have a costly interception
in the end zone in the second quarter. Favre was
matched by New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees,
who had 353 passing yards of his own, making up
for two earlier fumbles and an interception.
