The first win of the week
was Cincinnati getting 2.5 points at Kansas City,
and winning 23-10. Quarterback, Carson Palmer
threw for a very pedestrian 127 yards, but looked
good overall. Most of the offensive damage was
done via the running game with Rudi Johnson piling
up 96 yards on the ground.
For Kansas City, it was a
disappointing start for new head coach Herm Edwards,
as the Chiefs have traditionally had one of the
best home field advantages in the NFL. Running
back, Larry Johnson was limited to just 68 rushing
yards, after being an automatic 100 yard guy last
year.
Kansas City quarterback,
Trent Green got hurt in the third quarter, but
the Chiefs were already down two touchdowns at
that point.
The second win of the week
was Philadelphia giving five points at Houston,
and winning 24-10. Quarterback, Donovan McNabb
was the unmitigated star with 314 yards passing
and three touchdowns. Newly acquired wide receiver,
Donte’ Stallworth had 141 of those yards,
and the Eagles had enough of a running game to
keep Houston’s defense honest.
The game marked the debut
of Houston head coach, Gary Kubiak. His Texans
kept the game close in the first half at 14-10.
However, the Eagles outscored them 10-0 in the
second half, solidifying the cover in the fourth
quarter.
The first loss of the week
was New England giving nine points at home to
Buffalo, and winning 19-17. The Patriots started
off the game in dreadful fashion, with a fumble
on the first play for a Buffalo touchdown.
New England was down 17-7
at the half, and had to rally for 12 straight
unanswered points for the win. The Patriots even
had a slight chance for a push at the end of the
game, but the Buffalo backers deserved this one.
The good news for the Patriots
was that they dominated the game on the ground
with 183 rushing yards. The tandem of Laurence
Maroney and Corey Dillon could be one of the best
in the NFL. The passing game really looks like
it misses wide-out Deion Branch, as their leading
wide receiver was Reche Caldwell with just 33
yards.
The second loss of the week
was Dallas getting 2.5 points at Jacksonville,
and losing 24-17. The first half looked good at
the outset with the Cowboys taking a 10-0 lead.
However, a Drew Bledsoe interception late in the
second half led to a Jacksonville touchdown, and
the score was 10-10 at halftime.
The second half belonged
to the Jaguars, who turned up the defensive intensity
and took control of the game. Bledsoe once again
proved to be shaky late in a game, and the Tony
Romo era could start quicker than anyone expected.
