NFL free agency is over 10 days
old, and the player movement has come at a fast
and furious pace. With the majority of the big
free agents already signed, we thought it would
be a good time to look at a couple of the big
winners and losers so far.
Biggest Winners In NFL Free
Agency
Tennessee
The Titans got a wide receiver
in David Givens who will form a great one-two
punch with Drew Bennett. Center Kevin Mawae
is a brawler in the middle and still one of
the best centers in the game at 35 years old.
On defense, Chris Hope and David
Thornton are not huge names, but they are good
enough to be starters on this defense. Tennessee
was only 4-12 last season and way behind Indianapolis
and Jacksonville in the AFC South. They are
not close to catching either of those teams
yet, but this will help to start close the gap.
Carolina
Panthers
The Panthers went to the NFC
championship game last year before losing to
Seattle, but they are far from standing pat.
Their biggest free agent move was resigning
running DeShaun Foster, even though he is coming
off a serious injury.
Defensive tackle, Maake Kemoeatu
comes over from Baltimore to help anchor the
middle of the defense. If Kris Jenkins comes
back to form from injury, they will by very
tough to run against. Safety Shaun Williams
and defensive tackle, Damione Lewis are two
lesser signings. Their only significant loss
was linebacker Will Witherspoon, he now calls
St. Louis home.
Biggest Losers In NFL Free
Agency
New
England Patriots
The Patriots lost wide receiver
David Givens and signed Reche Caldwell to replace
him. That is a clear downgrade and worsens an
already thin unit. Linebacker, Willie McGinest
left the team after 12 years to join old coach,
Romeo Crennel in Cleveland. McGinest’s
leadership on the field and in the locker room
will be missed.
Kicker, Adam Vinatieri is a local
legend for his Super Bowl heroics, but he reached
an agreement with Indianapolis last night.
San
Diego Chargers
Quarterback, Drew Brees could
be the biggest off-season loss for any team
this year. The Chargers went 9-7 last year and
missed the playoffs, but they lost an incredible
five games by four points or less. They also
had one of the toughest schedules in the NFL.
Now, Phillip Rivers will
step in, and he is more the choice of General
Manger A.J. Smith as opposed to coach Marty
Schottenheimer. If this team takes a step backwards
next year, someone’s head is going to
roll.
