The NFL kicked off the playoffs
with Washington at Tampa Bay, with the Redskins
winning 17-10. This game was like watching football
in the 1940’s. The winning quarterback,
Mark Brunell threw for only 41 yards, and Washington
scored their touchdowns because of defensive
turnovers.
It is sad to say, but the most
exciting part of this game was when Washington
safety, Sean Taylor spit in the face of Tampa’s
Michael Pittman. Pittman responded with a punch,
but it was Taylor who got ejected. The Redskins
were lucky to overcome the loss of their best
defensive player, and it remains to be seen
if he will be allowed to play next week at Seattle.
The Saturday night game was New
England beating Jacksonville, 28-3. There is
going to be a lot of second guessing in this
game as to whether the Jaguars should have started
Byron Leftwich at quarterback. Leftwich had
missed the last five games with a broken ankle,
and clearly did not look like he was close to
100%.
Let me be the first to say that
it didn’t matter if Leftwich, David Garrard
or even John Elway was the quarterback in this
game. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are 10-0
in the playoffs during their Patriots regime.
They are doubly hard to beat at home, especially
when it is a warm weather team forced to play
a night game with temperatures in the teens.
New England will now move to play at Denver.
The early game on Sunday was
Carolina going to New York and dominating, 23-0.
Giants’ quarterback, Eli Manning threw
for only 113 yards with three interceptions.
It was a performance reminiscent of brother
Peyton’s efforts against New England in
the playoffs.
It was also the first time since
1980 that a home team was shut out in the post-season.
Not exactly a resume builder for Coach Tom Coughlin
or Manning, Carolina now travels to Chicago
to face a Bears team that they lost to, 13-3
earlier in the year. Something tells me that
this game will be a little closer.
The final game of the weekend
was Pittsburgh beating Cincinnati 31-17. The
Bengals lost their franchise quarterback, Carson
Palmer in the first quarter with a knee injury.
The rumor is that it is at least an MCL tear,
and maybe the more serious ACL.
Cincinnati managed to stay in
the game with Jon Kitna subbing in for Palmer,
even leading at the half, 17-14. In the second
half though, things started to unravel quickly
for Cincinnati. Pittsburgh reeled off 17 unanswered
points, and the Bengals fans could only wonder
if things would have been different with Palmer
in the game. Pittsburgh will now play at Indianapolis.
Overall for the week, the favorites
and underdogs were even at 2-2.
