Kentucky Derby

Smarty Jones is a descendant
of Triple Crown winners, Secretariat and Count
Fleet. He won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness,
but lost the Belmont Stakes after suffering
a late charge from long-shot Birdstone, ending
his Triple Crown hopes.
Smarty Jones was so popular in
his hometown of Philadelphia that he was put
on par with basketball player Julius Erving
(Dr. J), hockey player Bobby Clarke, and motion
picture boxer, Rocky Balboa. The question remains,
who has the best chance to be this year’s
Smarty Jones and capture America’s interest?

pretty amazing considering that it happened
three times in the 1970’s. In 1977, it
was Seattle Slew and in 1973 it was Secretariat.
Before that, it hadn’t happened since
1948.
Since 1973, four horses
have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown
only to lose the Belmont: Sunday Silence in
1989, Silver Charm in 1997, Real Quiet in 1998
and most recently Smarty Jones in 2004.
