After
slow starts, the teams are both 3-2 after five games,
with the Cowboys slight three point favorites at
home. The winner of this game moves into sole possession
of first place in the division. The
result of this game is likely to come down to
the performances of two vastly different offensive
weapons, Giants’ running back Tiki Barber
and the Cowboys’ unpredictable wide receiver
Terrell Owens.
Barber sent shock waves through
the Big Apple last week when he hinted that at
age 31, he is strongly considering retiring at
the end of the season.
The NFL’s leading rusher
before this weekend started, Barber has 533 yards
to his name, and was the star of the Giants’
come-from-behind win at Atlanta last week.
Barber is also the Giants’
all-time rushing leader, and is chasing his third
straight 100-yard game. However, he will find
the going a lot tougher against a Cowboys run
defense ranked number two in the NFL. Barber is
a combination of speed and power, but the Cowboys
believe they can contain him if their defense
stays disciplined, and carries out their proper
assignments.
Owens has had a troubled
first season in Dallas to say the least. It includes
an injured hamstring, a broken hand, a fine for
discipline reasons, and his recent “accidental
overdose”. The good news is that Owens finally
came around against the Texans last week by scoring
three touchdowns, the first time he has achieved
that feat since 2004.
Significantly, all three
TD’s came in the second half of their 34-6
win. Owens has declared he wants to get more involved
early in tonight’s game, an ominous warning
to the Giants’ defense.
Owens looks to have found
some chemistry with quarterback Drew Bledsoe,
and the pair are certain to pose some problems
to the Giants’ secondary. Bledsoe hasn’t
been in his best form in the early games, but
last week’s big win, and his new-found partnership
with Owens, is certain to boost his confidence.
Rival quarterback, Eli Manning
has also had an inconsistent start to the season,
but he has three excellent options through the
air in Plaxico Burress, Amani Toomer and Jeremy
Shockey.
Summary and Outlook:
The Cowboys have outscored
their opponents, 61-16 in their two games at home
this year, but it was against Washington and Houston
so it needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
Overall, the Cowboys have had a far easier schedule
than the Giants.
After losing two of their
first three games, New York has recovered strongly
and are making the best of a tough early schedule.
History shows the Giants struggle in MNF games
on the road, with just nine wins from 31 starts.
There is rarely much between
these two well-balanced teams, but the Cowboys
look slightly stronger at home provided Owens
can stay focused after his best game for the franchise
last week. And with three games on the road coming
up, it’s vital for the Cowboys to take this
clash at Texas Stadium.
