The
Cover Corner - November 02, 2006
by: VIP.com
By Michael Licalsi: The Cover
Corner has three college selections including
Friday night’s Air Force at Army. The year-to-date
record has taken a bit of a hit the last couple
of weeks, and now stands at 8-12. The NFL selections
are scheduled to come out on Friday.
Editor’s Note: The
selections in this column are purely the opinion
of the writer, and are not being endorsed by any
parties.
Air Force (-6.5) at Army
Both teams are struggling
heading into this game. Army is just 3-6 and Air
Force is 3-4.
Army has averaged 284 yards
per game on offense, while Air Force moves the
ball at a respectable 348 yards per game.
Air Force does most of their
damage on the ground as they are ranked third
in the nation at 267 yards per game. Their numbers
are much more humble through the air at 80 yards
per contest.
Both squads score comparably
with Army being a full point higher on average
for the season. Army must control the turnovers,
and being at home, I see that happening. Air Force
may win this outright, but I see Army keeping
the game within the number.
Pick: Army
Penn State (+6.5) at Wisconsin
Wisconsin is 8-1 overall
and a perfect 5-0 at home this season. Penn State
is 6-3 overall and 2-2 on the road. In the Big
10, the Badgers are right behind Ohio State and
Michigan at 5-1. Penn State is 4-2 in the Big
10.
Wisconsin is 6-1-1 ATS this
year, and has been 11-3 ATS in their last 14 home
games. Penn State is 3-4-1 ATS this year, but
just 1-4 ATS against winning teams.
My viewpoint is that Penn
State can keep this game entertaining, but the
Badgers are too much for the Nittany Lions to
handle in Camp Randall Stadium. This will be Penn
State’s second road game in a row, while
Wisconsin learned their lesson last week in a
close win against Indiana.
I feel comfortable giving
seven points for a team that has only lost once
versus the number. They have also been entertaining
to watch all season.
Pick: Wisconsin
Ohio State (-26.5) at Illinois
Ohio State is 9-0 on the
year, the number one team in the country, and
the odds on favorite to win the national championship.
So of course, I’m picking Illinois.
Illinois is 2-7 on the year,
but they played tough last week at Wisconsin,
and also two weeks ago at Penn State. The coaching
staff and fans are ready for the premiere program
in the nation to come to town.
This is a good opportunity
for another home underdog to make a stand, and
they have a lot of wiggle room with a 26.5 point
spread.
The Buckeyes will win, but
I see this being somewhat of a letdown game with
Michigan right around the corner in two weeks.
Pick: Illinois
