Chicago
(5-0) plans to
hit the Cardinals early, and hit them hard, blowing
them off the field just as they did against Buffalo
last week.
The
Bears started in textbook style last Sunday, scoring
the first five times they touched the ball, and
racking up a commanding 27-0 halftime lead before
cruising to a 40-7 victory.
The Bears appear to be the
most complete team in the NFL at this stage of
the season, averaging 31.2 points on offense and
conceding a mere 7.2. A team that has struggled
on offense in recent seasons, the Bears “O”
has started 2006 superbly, with quarterback Rex
Grossman in commanding form.
Grossman has shrugged off
his injury problems from the last couple of years,
and with 10 touchdowns to his credit, is second
only to Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb.
Grossman has many ‘go
to’ men, with running back Cedric Benson
joining that list last week, scoring his first
two NFL touchdowns in an impressive showing against
the Bills.
The
Cardinals (1-4) won their opening game
against San Francisco in fine style, but it’s
been all downhill since then. The Cardinals have
struggled on defense throughout the first five
weeks of the season, and it’s doubtful they
will be able to handle an early Bears’ onslaught.
Arizona needs to feed off
the emotion of the crowd in the first quarter,
and try to hang in the game. Close contests against
St Louis (16-14 in Week 3) and Kansas City (23-20
last Sunday) could have been won, but inexperience
and crucial errors cost the Cardinals dearly.
A big positive did come out
of last week with a solid first NFL start by rising
quarterback, Matt Leinart. With Coach Dennis Green
feeling the heat, veteran Kurt Warner made way
for Leinart, who threw for two touchdowns and
almost steered the Cardinals home against the
Chiefs.
The loss of wide receiver
Larry Fitzgerald with a hamstring injury will
make it tougher for Leinart against the well-drilled
Bears defense, but he still has Anquan Boldin
and Bryant Johnson as outside targets.
Green is desperate for big-name
signing, Edgerrin James to begin earning his massive
pay check. The running back is averaging just
68.6 yards per game and is capable of producing
a lot more. Of course, a woeful offensive line
doesn’t help matters.
Summing
Up: Neither side boasts an impressive record
under the bright lights of MNF. The Cardinals
have won just once since 1977, while the Bears
have lost their last four games straight up.
A more telling statistic
in this game is that the Bears have won four of
the last five clashes between these teams. With
Grossman playing with plenty of confidence and
their defense in typically ruthless form, they
should win, and win big.
