"THE EDGE"
The Baltimore Ravens are 9:2
to win the AFC North, 20:1 to win the AFC conference,
and 40:1 to win the Super Bowl.

When the Ravens finally
made the long awaited Steve McNair trade yesterday,
the betting public around the world suddenly
looked at the Ravens in a whole new light.
You see, over the last
few years, the Ravens have not been taken seriously
as a Super Bowl contender. Sure, they had a
dominant offensive line and running game at
times. And their defense led by linebacker Ray
Lewis was always championship caliber.
The problem has been an
anemic passing attack that has made their offense
one-dimensional. That doesn’t cut it over
the course of a 16 game regular season schedule.
The fact that the passing
game was so bad was surprising to a lot of people.
Todd Heap has been one of the best tight ends
in the league. The receivers have been at least
average and they were upgraded last year with
free agent Derrick Mason and rookie Mark Clayton.
Even quarterback, Kyle
Boller is a guy with a big arm and a first round
pedigree. You would think a coach like Brian
Billick, who once had a reputation as an offensive
genius, would have been able to formulate a
decent passing attack with this group. Instead,
the passing offense has ranked 22nd, 31st and
21st the last three seasons.
Enter Steve McNair
McNair is the 2003 NFL
co-MVP along with Peyton Manning. He took Tennessee
to the Super Bowl in the 1999 season and made
a trip to the AFC championship game in the 2002
season. Yes, the Titans have struggled badly
the last two years going 9-23 combined, but
that was mostly due to salary cap cuts the team
was forced to make.
Of course, the big issue
when it comes to McNair is injuries. He missed
two starts in 2003 and 2005. In 2004, he made
only eight starts. There were a number of other
games that McNair played in that he was far
less than 100%. The guy is the ultimate warrior
at the signal caller position, but durability
issues are a major concern.
When the Ravens pulled
the trigger on this move, it was a message to
Boller that the team doesn’t trust him
to take them to the next level. If McNair is
healthy this year, then Baltimore is a very
interesting longshot.
If not, a psychologically
damaged Boller will not be able to take this
team where they want to go.
