VIPsports Edge continues
its look at 2007 Super Bowl contenders. Conference
odds will be made available at a later date.
Last week, we focused on
the four "mid market" teams with odds
between 15:1 and 30:1. Today, we focus on four
long-shots with odds of 35:1 or greater.
Sleeper - Atlanta Falcons
35:1
You take a look at the
Falcons 35:1 odds, and the first thing you ask
yourself is when did everyone jump off the Michael
Vick bandwagon?
Vick did not make much
progress in his 5th NFL season last year, but
he is still as talented as they come, and it
sometimes takes years for quarterbacks to become
comfortable in the pocket. The team has been
aggressive on defense this off-season, trading
for pass rusher John Abraham and signing safety
Lawyer Milloy. This could be a big bounce back
year from an 8-8 campaign in 2005.
Sleeper - Kansas City
Chiefs 35:1
Former coach, Dick Vermeil
was never able to bring the same championship
magic to Kansas City as he did with St. Louis.
The Chiefs have had a potent
offense for years now, and they should continue
that trend under new offensive coordinator,
Mike Solari. New Head Coach, Herm Edwards has
a defensive background, although he never had
dominating defenses with the Jets. The Chiefs
added a lot of defensive personnel through free
agency and the draft last year, and they are
hoping it bears fruit this season.
Sleeper - Minnesota
Vikings 40:1
The Vikings were 9-7 last
season, but finished outside the playoff hunt
even after winning seven out of their last nine
games.
Quarterback, Brad Johnson
took over for an injured Daunte Culpepper last
season and the veteran stabilized the offensive
unit. Johnson should be the starter again, although
he is not the long term answer. New coach, Brad
Childress brings a great offensive resume to
the team from Philadelphia. Defensively, the
Vikings are still trying to find its rhythm,
but there is a lot of talent there.
Sleeper - St. Louis
Rams 75:1
St. Louis is coming off
a 6-10 record, their worst mark since 1998.
Remember though, this team went 12-4 two years
ago and still has a lot of the same weapons
in place.
Offensively, quarterback
Marc Bulger is set at the skill positions with
receivers, Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce, and running
back Stephen Jackson. Now, Bulger needs to stay
healthy for 16 games. Defensively, the team
has work to do, but they have signed some veteran
free agents, and still have the 11th pick in
the draft. The Rams are a definite long-shot,
but these odds make them appealing.
