"THE EDGE"
A look at some NFC teams’
Over / Under win totals for the 2006 season.
A view of the AFC came out yesterday.
By Michael Robinson
Philadelphia
– Over 8.5 Wins (-155)
The Eagles went 6-10 last year
as the Terrell Owens’ saga tore the team
apart, and Donovan McNabb was injured for most
of the season. Owens is playing in Dallas now,
but McNabb is back, and that means the locker-room
should be a lot less divided. McNabb is still
a very good quarterback, and he will be playing
with a large chip on his shoulder.
Remember, this is a team that
went to two NFC conference games before Owens
graced the city of Philadelphia with his presence.
The Eagles need to get a more balanced offensive
attack, and that means running Brian Westbrook
more. The defense has shored up the line and
should return to being a solid unit once again.
This clearly looks like an above .500 team.
Minnesota
– Under 8 Wins (+120)
It has been a turbulent off-season
for Minnesota as they have had to deal with
the ramifications of their boat / sex cruise,
as well as the firing of their Vice President
of player personnel. Those issues, plus the
messy departure of quarterback Daunte Culpepper,
were not the tranquil start that new coach Brad
Childress was looking for.
Veteran quarterback, Brad Johnson
had a solid 2005 season, but he will be 38 years
old at the start of the season, and Mike McMahon
has not proven to be a quality backup. The offense
lacks star power at the offensive skill positions,
and while the defense looks good on paper, they
have to learn how to play like a cohesive unit.
The Vikings will be fortunate to go 8-8.
St.
Louis – Over 7 Wins (+110)
It is unfair to pin the fortunes
of a team on one player, but if Marc Bulger
is healthy this year, the Rams have a chance
at a good season. The Rams have good wide receivers,
good running backs, a decent offensive line,
and even drafted a couple of talented tight
ends. This team will be able to put up points
as long as backup Gus Frerotte, stays a backup.
The defense is a work in
progress, although they did sign three free
agents, La’Roi Glover, Will Witherspoon
and Cory Chaveous, who are penciled in as starters.
The team also drafted cornerback Tye Hill in
the first round. They join a group of holdovers
that have talent, but played poorly as a unit
last year. If the defense can play close to
average football, this will be at least a .500
squad.
