Hail to the king, the king is
dead. New England’s chance at three straight
championships was derailed by Denver on Saturday
night, 27-13. It was the first time that Patriots’
quarterback, Tom Brady has lost a playoff game
in 11 attempts.
The ironic part about this game
is that New England accomplished what they wanted
to from a defensive standpoint. Denver was held
under 100 yards rushing, but they were able
to generate points off of five Patriots’
turnovers. New England has won plenty of playoff
games in similar fashion, and it just proves
how hard it is to continually win in the post-season,
especially on the road.
If Tom Brady was the king, Peyton
Manning of the Colts is the prince that has
never ascended to the throne. That will be the
case for at least another year, as Pittsburgh
went into Indianapolis and shocked the Colts,
21-18.
Indianapolis trailed the game
21-3, but made a furious rally after getting
a fortunate call from the refs. The Steelers’
Troy Polamalu clearly intercepted a Manning
pass, but it was reversed on replay on one of
the worst refereeing decisions I have ever seen.
The Colts then had a chance to
tie the game with seconds left on a Mike Vanderjagt
46 yard field goal. It was badly missed right
on a major choke job, ironic in the fact that
Vanderjagt criticized Manning for poor play
in the playoffs a few years back. The loss means
that Denver now gets home field advantage against
Pittsburgh in the AFC championship game.
In the NFC on Saturday, Seattle
outlasted Washington, 20-10. The Seahawks lost
MVP running back, Shaun Alexander in the first
quarter with a concussion, and there wasn’t
a fan in the Pacific Northwest who wasn’t
at least a little worried at that point.
Seattle also kept hurting itself
with three turnovers in the game, but the Redskins’
offense was not able to capitalize. Only in
the fourth quarter did Washington quarterback
Mark Brunell show that he had a pulse, but it
was too little, too late.
You have to give Seattle Coach
Mike Holmgren credit for keeping his team calm
after the Alexander loss. They now host the
upstart Carolina Panthers for the conference
championship.
Carolina made it to the NFL’s
“Final Four” by avenging an earlier
season loss to Chicago, 29-21. Carolina quarterback,
Jake Delhomme once again proved that he is a
clutch player in the post-season with 319 yards
passing and three touchdowns.
Shaun Alexander may be the league’s
MVP, but Carolina wide receiver, Steve Smith
is the most dangerous player left in the playoffs.
Smith had 218 yards receiving as Chicago cornerbacks
were continually burned on single coverage.
Smith should have always had a safety rolled
his way, and the Bears paid the ultimate price
for their coaching gaffe.
Overall for the week, the favorites
and underdogs were even at 2-2.
