"THE EDGE"
The wait is over as VIPsports.com
has released their Over / Under win totals for
the 2006 NFL season.
By Michael Robinson
This is one of the most
anticipated proposition bets of the season.
Not only do you get to see how the experts think
your team will do this season, it is also another
fun way to follow your team from the first game
to the end of the season.
It is very tempting to
go through each team and give my thoughts and
opinions. In the interest of brevity and not
losing your attention, I will focus on three
of the AFC teams that jumped right out at me.
A look at the NFC will come out on Wednesday.
Indianapolis
– Under 11.5 Wins (-135)
The last time the Colts
won less than 12 games was way back in 2002
when they went 10-6. The biggest loss for the
Colts personnel-wise was of course, Edgerrin
James. James is off to sunny Arizona and the
Colts will try a tandem of Dominic Rhodes and
rookie Joseph Addai to replace him.
The problem is that much
of the Colts’ vaunted passing attack is
based on play-action, and without the threat
of James back there, the defense will not be
bite nearly as much. The Colts’ schedule
is also tougher this year, having to play the
NFC East as opposed to the NFC West last season.
New
England – Over 10.5 Wins (+120)
As the old saying goes,
“the rumor of the Patriots’ demise
has been greatly exaggerated.” New England
lost some big name free agents as they do every
year, but they still have the “Big Three”
of quarterback Tom Brady, defensive lineman
Richard Seymour, and Hall of Fame Coach Bill
Belichick.
The Patriots’ drafted
almost all offense this year, and they will
have the necessary depth now to handle most
injuries. Defensively, Belichick is a genius
in finding lesser known players to plug into
his system. The Patriots went 10-6 last year
and sat their starters in a final week loss
to Miami. With a far easier schedule on paper
this year, their record should improve.
NY
Jets – Under 6.5 Wins (-105)
The Jets have a ton of
question marks starting with quarterback Chad
Pennington who may or may not be healthy this
year. Patrick Ramsey is the alternative, but
both signal callers will be saddled with a declining
running back in Curtis Martin who will struggle
to keep the offense balanced.
Defensively, new
coach Eric Mangini will install the “Bill
Belichick” hybrid defense that primarily
plays the 3-4. This new defense takes some time
for the players to get used to and for the coaches
to find the right talent. The Jets were 4-12
last year, and a 6-10 record would be fortunate
in my opinion.
